What to Expect: The First 24 Hours After a Dental Implant

Your Step-by-Step Recovery Guide from Inspired Dental Care
If you’ve just had a dental implant placed or you’re preparing for your appointment, you’re likely wondering what the recovery will feel like. The good news? For most patients, the first 24 hours are manageable with the right aftercare and expectations in mind.
At Inspired Dental Care, we want you to feel informed, reassured, and supported every step of the way. This guide will walk you through exactly what to expect during the first day after your dental implant surgery, including helpful do’s and don’ts from our implant expert, Dr. André Faro Leite.
First, take a Deep Breath: You’ve Done the Hard Part
The surgical procedure itself is typically straightforward, especially when performed by an experienced clinician. Dr. Faro Leite uses advanced techniques and detailed planning to make your implant placement as gentle and efficient as possible. Once the implant is in place, your body will begin the healing process, starting with the first 24 hours.
⏰ The First Hour After Surgery
When you leave the dental chair, you’ll likely still be numb from local anaesthesia. During this time:

  • Do not eat or drink hot items until the numbness fully wears off, this prevents accidental burns or biting your cheek.
  • Avoid touching or disturbing the implant site with your tongue or fingers.

If you had sedation, you’ll need someone to accompany you home, and rest is strongly advised.
🧊 Hours 1–6: Managing Discomfort and Swelling
Mild to moderate discomfort is common once the anaesthetic begins to wear off. Here’s what to expect and how to manage it:
✅ Pain Relief
Take any prescribed or recommended over-the-counter pain relief (such as ibuprofen or paracetamol) as advised by Dr. Faro Leite. Don’t wait until the pain kicks in, taking it proactively can help control discomfort.
✅ Swelling & Bruising
Swelling is your body’s natural response to surgery and usually peaks around 48 hours post-op. To keep it under control:

  • Apply an ice pack to your cheek in 20-minute intervals (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first day.
  • Keep your head elevated, even when lying down: use an extra pillow at night.

✅ Minor Bleeding
Some light bleeding or “oozing” from the implant site is normal during the first day. Change the gauze as needed, and bite down gently. If bleeding is heavy or persistent, contact Inspired Dental Care immediately.
🥤 Eating & Drinking After Your Implant
✅ Stick to Soft, Cool Foods
You’ll want to avoid chewing near the implant site. For the first day, opt for:

  • Yogurt
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smoothies (without a straw!)
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soup (lukewarm only)

Avoid anything spicy, crunchy, or too hot in temperature.
❌ Don’t Use Straws
Suction from a straw can dislodge the clot that’s forming and increase the risk of dry socket or delayed healing.
🚫 What NOT to Do in the First 24 Hours
Here are the big no-no’s in the first day post-op:

  • No smoking – Even a single cigarette can dramatically impact healing and increases the risk of implant failure.
  • No alcohol – It can interact with medications and slow the body’s healing response.
  • No vigorous rinsing – It’s tempting to “clean” the area, but forceful rinsing can dislodge the blood clot. Gentle saltwater rinses are okay after 24 hours.
  • No intense exercise – Take it easy. Rest and allow your body to recover.

Oral Hygiene on Day 1
It’s important to maintain overall oral hygiene while being gentle with the surgical site:

  • Brush your teeth as normal, but the implant area you will very likely be instructed to clean with an ultra soft brush.
  • You may be given a special antibacterial mouthwash (such as chlorhexidine) to use. Follow Dr. Faro Leite’s instructions carefully.
  • After 24 hours, you can begin gentle saltwater rinses (1 tsp of salt in a glass of warm water) to keep the area clean and reduce inflammation.

 Sleeping After a Dental Implant
The first night after surgery, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. To help you sleep comfortably:

  • Use extra pillows to keep your head elevated-this reduces swelling.
  • Avoid sleeping on the side of the implant.
  • Take your painkillers as directed before bed.
  • Keep water by your bed in case your mouth feels dry.
