Can I go to the dentist with a cold sore

Posted by IDC Team | 4th August 2025 | Team News

Cold sores are a common and often frustrating part of life for many people. These small blisters, typically appearing around the lips and mouth, are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). While they usually clear up on their own within 7–10 days, they can be sore, unsightly, and sometimes even painful. But what happens when you’ve got a dental appointment and a cold sore appears? Should you still go, or is it better to reschedule?

What is a Cold Sore?

Cold sores are fluid-filled blisters caused by the herpes simplex virus (usually HSV-1). The virus is incredibly common, according to the World Health Organisation, around two-thirds of people under the age of 50 carry the virus, though not everyone shows symptoms.

Once you’ve been infected, the virus remains in your system and can become active during times of stress, illness, sun exposure, or hormonal changes. The blisters often start with a tingling or burning sensation before becoming visible. After a few days, the sores scab over and eventually heal.

Is it Safe to Have Dental Treatment with a Cold Sore?

The short answer is: it depends.

Cold sores are highly contagious on the first few days, especially when they’re open or oozing. During dental treatment, your lips may be stretched or manipulated, which can cause discomfort or even delay healing. Additionally, the virus can spread more easily during this time, both to the dental team and to other parts of your own mouth or face.

Here are a few reasons why dentists may recommend rescheduling:

  • Increased risk of virus transmission
The virus that causes cold sores can be spread through close contact. During dental treatments, saliva droplets and contact with the lips are common, so there’s an increased chance of spreading the infection.
  • Risk of autoinoculation (self-spread)
Manipulating the area can potentially spread the virus to other parts of your face or even your eyes, which can lead to a serious condition called ocular herpes.
  • Pain and sensitivity
Dental work can involve moving your lips and mouth for an extended period of time. If you have an active cold sore, this can be uncomfortable and may even cause the sore to split, increasing the risk of secondary infection.
  • Healing may be delayed
Stretching or aggravating the area around a cold sore can delay the healing process and may make the outbreak worse.

When Is It OK to Keep Your Appointment?

If your cold sore is fully healed, or if it’s just in the tingling or scabbing phase, you may be able to keep your appointment. However, it’s always best to call your dental practice and check first.

At Inspired Dental Care in Exeter, we ask that you contact us as soon as you notice a cold sore before your scheduled appointment. Our clinical team can assess your situation and help you decide whether to come in or reschedule for a later date.

Exceptions: When You Shouldn’t Delay

While rescheduling may be the best course of action in most cases, there are times when you shouldn’t delay seeing the dentist:

  • Emergency dental treatment
If you’re experiencing severe dental pain, a broken tooth, swelling, or signs of infection, it’s important to seek care as soon as possible. In these situations, we can still treat you while taking appropriate precautions.
  • Ongoing treatment that can’t be delayed
Some complex treatments, such as certain types of orthodontics or procedures involving temporary restorations, may require timely completion. Again, it’s important to call your dental team and discuss your specific circumstances.

What Happens If You Come in with a Cold Sore?

If you attend your appointment at Inspired Dental Care with a visible cold sore, our team will carry out a risk assessment. Depending on the severity and the type of treatment planned, we may decide to:

  • Proceed with caution: For minor treatments such as a routine examination, we may continue with appropriate protective measures in place.
  • Reschedule: If your treatment involves extended contact with the lips or face (such as a scale and polish, or crown/veneer work), we may recommend postponing the procedure until your cold sore has healed.
  • Adapt the treatment: If it’s an emergency or urgent case, we will take additional infection control measures to ensure everyone’s safety.

What Should You Do If You Have a Cold Sore Before Your Appointment?

Here’s what we recommend:

  1. Call us: Contact Inspired Dental Care in Exeter on 01392 272385 and let us know you’ve developed a cold sore. Our friendly team will advise you based on your individual treatment.
  2. Avoid touching the sore: This helps prevent spreading the virus to other areas.
  3. Use antiviral creams: Over-the-counter treatments can help speed up healing if used early.
  4. Postpone non-urgent treatment: If your appointment is for something routine, it’s best to reschedule until the sore has fully healed.
