What are facial aesthetics?

Facial aesthetics is a term used to describe the use of clinically safe injectables for non-surgical facial rejuvenation, to help reduce the signs of aging, by relaxing facial expressions, softening expression lines or to define, re-volumise and accentuate facial features.

The natural aging process, lifestyle and environmental factors can contribute to unwanted lines and wrinkles on the face. As we age, we stop producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are responsible for the skin’s firmness, plumpness and moisture. The reduction in elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid causes the skin to become drier, less elastic, less supple and thinner. Coupled with the changes in the skin we also lose fat density in the fat pads and loose minerals in the bones of the face, which over time creates lines, wrinkles and the sagging of skin with less structural support for the skin.

Non-surgical facial aesthetics are becoming more popular and accepted in comparison to surgical procedures, this is due to their ‘in-office’ minimally invasive techniques with more natural-looking results. The risks are lower, the costs are less, and the results are temporary.

Facial aesthetics are not solely for the aging face, they can correct or enhance features of the younger patient, such as lip asymmetry, thin upper lips, gummy smiles or as a preventative measure to prevent deeper lines occurring. The reasons for why patients seek facial aesthetics are endless, but the results are always the same, a small, natural enhancement resulting in a large boost in their confidence and self-esteem.

What treatments do we offer?

At Inspired Dental Care we offer dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections.
Dermal fillers for the lips and peri-oral region (nose-mouth lines, smokers lines).
Anti-wrinkle injections for forehead lines, frown lines, crows feet (around the eyes), gummy smile, hyperhidrosis (excess sweating).

What are the differences between these treatments?

Dermal fillers are substances injected beneath the skin surface to add fullness and volume. Dermal fillers ‘fill in’ lines left by skin laxity or add volume to naturally thin lips. Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body, hyaluronic acid helps keep skin plump and hydrated, it binds water to help retain moisture and suppleness. Injecting hyaluronic acid is safe and known by the body, therefore it is not rejected as being a foreign object. Dermal fillers are injected using a fine, sterile needle provided with the syringe of filler. There is minimal discomfort but for patients comfort we can either carry out the procedure using dental injections to fully anaesthetise the lips or topical anaesthesia using a cream. Dermal fillers are temporary and will be eventually broken down by the body, results vary between individuals, but top ups are advised yearly.

Anti-wrinkle injections are performed using a medically regulated toxin, Botulinum toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. They work by preventing and reducing the appearance of wrinkles caused by expressive muscles, by blocking nerve transmission to the muscles relaxing the overexpression and over contraction of these muscles, leading to smoother skin and preventing deepening of the lines. We aim for a more natural, refreshed result over the frozen, inexpressive face that looks ‘overdone’. Anti-wrinkle injections are carried out under the prescription of a Dentist and are carried out with a very fine sterile needle in multiple ‘safe’ points over the affected area. There are usually no obvious signs that this procedure has been carried out, so therefore patients can usually go about their day as normal post treatment. Results can take up to 2 weeks to take full effect and the effects last between 3-6 months.

Dermal fillers can be used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle injections. Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used for the upper face such as the forehead, crows feet (around the eyes) and frown lines, whereas dermal fillers focus on replacing volume in the lower portions of the face such as the lips and the peri-oral region (around the mouth).

Why choose Inspired Dental Care for facial aesthetics?

The facial aesthetics industry is not well regulated. 80% of dermal filler treatments are carried out by non-medical professionals (such as beauticians or hairdressers), who have completed a short one day course, with very basic knowledge of facial anatomy and unable to identify the signs of complications and how to manage them. At Inspired Dental Care your safety is our main priority, being a dental practice, we are regulated to ensure we have equipment and cleanliness necessary to provide treatments safely in a sterile environment preventing infection. Our ethos is to provide the highest standard of dentistry in a relaxed, contemporary environment by clinicians that have heavily invested in their training and state of the art equipment. Being dental professionals, we specialise in facial anatomy, we provide dental injections throughout the day and most of our work is producing the highest quality of aesthetic dentistry for patients unhappy with their smile which can be framed by the highest quality of facial aesthetics.

Our Dental Therapist Rachael completed a three-day hands-on course with the world-renowned Professor Bob Khanna who has over 25 years’ experience in the industry, he is an expert in facial aesthetics and complications managements enabling his students to produce safe and predictable results. Rachael has achieved 5-star results for her patients, who are very pleased with their results.
