My name is Mitch, I live in Exeter, and I play and teach music for a living
My teeth grew in crooked as a kid, and I decided not to have braces as a teen, as I just didn’t feel ready. This meant I’d smile without showing my teeth, as I was so self-conscious. I’d see different pictures of me smiling, and I’d hate it.
But I had a turning point- I took a video of me on the beach with a few friends on a beautiful summer’s day. It should have been a really happy memory, but when I watched it back, all I could see was my smile. It left me feeling upset, and it was at that point where I thought, enough is enough!
Well, about 4 years ago, after the beach incident, I immediately enquired that evening, and I had a response the next day.
So, I had fixed orthodontics (braces). I initially wanted Invisalign, but I was a slightly complex case. In my case, braces were the best option in order to receive the best results. I knew it would be a lengthier treatment, and I expected some discomfort during the process, but once you’re in, you’re in. You get used to it quickly.
Andre? He has been fantastic the entire time through. He was very honest and explained the difference between the results I’d achieve with Invisalign compared to fixed orthodontic braces- which I found very endearing. You could really tell that the best results and my confidence were at the forefront of his mind. It may have been a longer treatment, but it gave me the best results, which is what I know we both wanted from the very start.
Life is so different now! I get comments on my teeth in a good way- which I really had to get used to- it still takes me by surprise today. And the nicest thing is that it’s now the first thing I notice every morning. I go to the bathroom to brush my teeth, I look in the mirror, and see my amazing new smile.
I’d say- the soonest moment is now! Just go and do it. It’s so worth it. If he can fix my teeth, then he can pretty much fix anyone’s, I think.
Wow, in one word? I think you’ve already summed it up for yourselves…Inspired!
Mitch’s story highlights something many people experience but don’t always talk about- the deep connection between your smile and your confidence. While braces are often thought of as a cosmetic treatment, their impact goes far beyond simply straightening teeth.
For many patients, the journey begins with small habits: covering their mouth when they laugh, avoiding smiling in photos, or feeling uncomfortable speaking in social situations. Over time, these behaviours can affect confidence in ways that extend into both personal and professional life. Choosing to begin orthodontic treatment is often less about appearance alone and more about regaining a sense of self-assurance.
Braces work by gradually aligning the teeth and correcting bite issues, which can also improve overall oral health. Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of plaque build-up, gum disease, and uneven wear. In this way, orthodontic treatment is an investment not only in how your smile looks, but in how it functions long-term.
The process itself can feel like a commitment. As Mitch mentioned, there can be an adjustment period, and for some, treatment may take longer than expected. However, most patients find that they adapt quickly, and the routine becomes part of everyday life. Regular reviews and visible progress along the way help to maintain motivation, as small changes gradually build into a significant transformation.
What often surprises patients most is the emotional impact at the end of treatment. Seeing a new smile for the first time can be a powerful moment. It’s not just about straight teeth—it’s about recognising a version of yourself that feels more confident and more aligned with how you want to present yourself to the world.
The changes don’t stop there. Many people report feeling more comfortable in social settings, more willing to speak up, and more at ease in front of a camera. Even simple daily routines, like brushing your teeth and looking in the mirror, can take on a new meaning. What was once a source of insecurity can become a source of pride.
Ultimately, braces are not just about changing your smile- they can change how you feel about yourself. Mitch’s experience is a reminder that taking that first step, even after years of hesitation, can lead to a completely different outlook. And for many, that decision becomes one of the most worthwhile investments they ever make in themselves.
